The Slant Fin Lynx Modulating Condensing Gas Boiler’s high efficiency comes from being a Mod Con boiler as we call them in the trade. In a modulating burner the air and fuel is premixed in a fan as it is sent to the stainless steel burner. This premixing makes the flame very stable and clean burning. In addition modulating burners use a microprocessor-based control, which monitors the operation of the boiler and burner, the microprocessor determines the exact heat demand and adjusts the modulation of the burner to match the demand eliminating cycling of the burner which is very inefficient. This concept is very similar to using the gas pedal in your car and keeps the burner where it delivers maximum efficiency and comfort. The condensing boiler is the second part of the equation. Condensing boilers use an extra heat exchanger section, which scrubs the heat out of the flue gases and uses it to preheat the water returning to the boiler. The flue gases end up having so much heat removed from them that steam in the flue gases condense to water, and the flue gases can be exhausted through PVC pipe. This condensing preheating section utilizes heat wasted in previous boiler designs and is what gives this new generation of boilers their ultra efficiencies in the mid 90% range. The water that condenses from the flue gases are corrosive so the boilers need to be constructed from corrosion resistant materials such as aluminum and stainless steel, and neutralizers are required on the condensate drain. One of the biggest benefits other than energy cost savings is that the flue gases of the Mod Con boilers are quite clean and their emissions meet the Low NOx standards that are being adopted across the country. The Slant Fin Lynx features a cast aluminum heat exchanger that has a low mass and high thermal conductivity which quickly gets the heat into the room instead of spending time warming up the boiler. The modulating burner has a turndown ratio of 3.4:1 with inputs of 25,000 – 85,000 Btuh flowing to its stainless steel burner. The entire boiler when uncrated weighs only 78 Lbs. and measures 34 ¾” H X 18”W X 14 ¾” D. The Slant Fin Lynx features a microprocessor-based control that shows the operating mode and temperature on the display next to the power switch and pressure gauge. The control monitors the heat demand and modulates the burner to math the demand. It also has provisions for outdoor reset with an optional sensor and can provide control of domestic hot water production with options built right in. The Lynx also controls the sequence of operation and monitors status with an LED display showing diagnostic information as well as set up and operating conditions. The Slant Fin Lynx Gas Boiler has spark ignition, gas valve, inlet and outlet temperature sensors, boiler drain valve and condensate trap provided as standard equipment. The Lynx also has sealed combustion with no connection to the air inside the home, all the air connections are to the outside.
