Raypak XPak Mod-Con Hydronic Wall Hung Boiler Review

The Raypak XPak Mod-Con Hydronic Wall Hung Boilers are available in two model sizes, the model 85 and Model 120. The Raypak XPak Model 85 has an input of 87,000 Btu/hr, and the Raypak XPak Model 120 has an input of 119,500 Btu/hr.

Raypak was founded over 60 years ago by Al Whittel as many businesses were, by him working out of the garage of his Southern California home. Through the years the business grew and today is operated out of a 235,000 sq. ft. plant in Oxnard, California, and a manufacturing plant in Toronto, Canada, with additional units built under license in England. Raypak is now one of the recognized world leaders in the field of copper finned heaters and boilers, and is a division of Rheem Manufacturing Company. Raypak was the first Boiler manufacturer to become ISO 9001 registered in 1996 and their boilers are well known for their efficiency, quality standards, and reliability.

The Raypak XPak Model 85 and Model 120 Hydronic Boilers are Mod-Con Boilers. This means that the burner can modulate its firing rate to closely match your heating needs very similar to you using the gas pedal when driving your car. This ensures that fuel is not wasted while providing your heating needs. The boiler is also a Condensing Boiler, which means that the boiler uses the exhausting flue gases to pre-heat the water returning to the boiler. This feature makes Condensing Boilers very efficient and the flue gasses exiting the unit have so much heat extracted from them that moisture in the gases condenses. This allows the flue gases to be exhausted through any Cat IV venting system including those made of stainless steel, aluminum, polypropylene, and CPVC. The Raypak XPak Boilers and be concentric vented, separately vented, or use room air for combustion and have a single flue vent, they can also be either vented through the roof or, through a side wall, giving great flexibility to the installation. The Raypak XPak Boilers also are clean burning which enables them to meet the Low NOx regulations even the SCAQMD standards going into effect for 2012.

The Raypak XPak Model 85 and Model 120 Boilers can be used in both low and high temperature heating applications, and when used with a 3-way valve and an indirect water heater can also provide domestic hot water. The units can be mounted in tight quarters with only 1” (2.54 cm) of clearance on the sides, 12” (30.5 cm) clearance on top, and 24” (61 cm) clearance in front of the unit for servicing requiring as little as 4 sq. ft. (1.22 sq. m) of wall space. All the connections for water, condensate, gas, pressure relief, and electrical are coming in on the bottom of the unit. Both models have a 6063 extruded aluminum alloy heat exchanger rated for 45 psig, a factory installed Grundfos 3-speed circulator pump whish is thermostatically controlled to maintain proper flow rates through the boiler, on board diagnostics with error codes which will shut the unit down in the event of an unsafe operating condition, and direct spark ignition. The Raypak XPak Mod-Con Wall Hung Boilers are also supplied equipped for natural gas but a propane conversion kit is supplied with each unit. They may be installed at any altitude up to 5,000’ (1,524 m) elevation and above that up to 10,000’ (3,048 m) with a combustion test performed on them.

The Raypak XPak Mod-Con Hydronic Wall Hung Boilers are very quiet measuring only 60 dba at the maximum firing rate of the larger unit allowing installation without objectionable noise levels. The units come with a pressure gauge, controls monitoring high limit, operating limit, high condensate level, air pressure, and the flue, with a 100% flame monitor shut off / lockout. The gas is controlled by zero governor gas valve, and a negative pressure gas regulator along with a manual shut off and redundant valve feature. The cylindrical stainless steel burner is a non-clogging design that will not clog with particles in the air and dust so no incoming air filter is required.

The Raypak XPak Model 85 and Model 120 Boilers are supplied with a 1-Year Parts Warranty on the entire unit, a 3-Year Parts Warranty on the fan, and a 20-Year Parts Warranty on the heat exchanger Pro-Rated after 10-Years.
