Liberty Model 405 Drain Pump Review

The Liberty Model 405 Drain Pump is a great pump for bar sinks, dishwashers, utility sinks, basement kitchens, dehumidifiers, laundry trays and washer discharges where grey water needs to be pumped up to a sewer line. The Liberty 405 is plumbed for 2” pipe so a washer discharge could go direct to the pump container without a sink being installed and the pump has at least twice the capacity of the discharge of most residential washing machines.

The Liberty 405 features a polypropylene container with 5½ gallon capacity that has 3 – 2” threaded inlets built into it with 1 on the side and 2 on the top. Inside there is a ½ horsepower pump that pumps over 40 gallons per minute with 10’ of lift. The pump has permanently lubricated sealed ball bearings that are maintenance free and the motor housing is aluminum with a powder coat finish. The motor shaft is stainless steel and the shaft seals are carbon ceramic. The impeller is a cast polymer with the vanes mounted on a rear shroud to keep debris away from the seal area. The pump can pass 3/8” solids without clogging. The float switch is easily accessible through the top cover with just screws to remove and no pipes to disconnect. The unit comes with 2-10’ long cords and the float switch is a piggyback plug for easy trouble shooting of the unit. The Polypropylene container has an integral rubber gasket that makes the container air tight for no smells operation. And the Liberty Model 405 Drain pump comes with a 2=Year Warranty.

Plumbing the Liberty Model 405 is a simple piping task but in order for it to work well it must be done properly. The inlet should go into the side and should have a trap on it. The trap prevents odors from coming out of the container and up through the drain. The container needs a vent out of the top to be vented through the roof. You may tie into an existing vent but under no circumstances can a Studor Vent, AAV or, Cheater Vent be used as 2-way air flow is required in order for liquid to enter the container. The pump line should have a check valve and a ball valve just above the pump. Check out the related article, Eliminate Check Valve Noise from your Sump or Sewage Ejector Pump. The ball valve above the pump allows for easy servicing of the check valve without having to catch the contents of the pump line running up to the sewer.

If you have a drain that needs to be pumped up to the sewer The Liberty Model 405 is a great choice for a drain pump and is available at many plumbing supply houses.
