Laars NeoTherm NTH Residential Mod-Con Boiler Review

The Laars NeoTherm NTH Residential Mod-Con Boilers are available in four models from 80,000 – 210,000 Btu with efficiencies as high as 95.4% AFUE.

Laars was founded in 1948 by Avy Miller who as an engineer realized that utilizing a finned copper tube low mass heat exchanger with a high velocity water flow in a boiler could heat water nine times faster than a traditional cast iron boiler. Initially his products were used as swimming pool heaters but later were applied as space heating boilers and hot water boilers. Because the water velocity is high the formation of lime scaling on the boiler tubes is minimized allowing excellent heat transfer, which is a problem in many boilers. Today Laars has a manufacturing facility in Rochester, NH making a full product line of commercial and residential water heaters, boilers up to 5,000,000 Btu in size, storage tanks, combination heaters, storage tanks, controls, accessories, and pool heaters. The products are distributed through Laars’ distribution facility in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada all over the world. Laars is a subsidiary of Bradford White Corporation.

The Laars NeoTherm NTH Residential Mod-Con Boilers are Modulating Condensing Boilers, which means the burner modulates allowing the energy produced to closely match your heating needs without wasting energy by producing more heat than you need. The condensing feature uses the hot gases exhausting the unit to pre-heat the water returning to the boiler absorbing so much heat out of the flue gases that moisture in the flue gases are cooled enough to condense. These modulating and condensing features create very high efficiencies of 95%+ AFUE making them Energy Star certified, and also clean combustion that allows the Laars NeoTherm NTH Boilers to meet the Low NOx standards as low as 10ppm NOx. The Energy Star Certification allows the NeoTherm to qualify for rebate programs offered by utilities and the government.

The Laars NeoTherm NTH Residential Mod-Con Boilers are floor standing, direct vented and have sealed combustion so outside air is used for combustion instead of heated room air, they have a welded stainless steel heat exchanger, and with the top connections and zero clearance to combustibles under CSA with minimal requirements in the US can be installed in tight locations even alcoves and closets. When installed with an indirect water heater on its own zone the NeoTherm can be used to produce domestic hot water as well with domestic hot water priority and the sensor is included. The NeoTherm can be vented horizontal or vertical up to 100’ with PVC, has a 5:1 turndown ratio, burns either natural gas or propane, and has a built in Laars Integrated Control System with a user display and interface, overseeing the direct spark ignition, modulation, high limit control, temperature control, vent temperature cutoff, outdoor reset, high limit, flue gas temperature cutoff, and alarm output, with all sensors included. Standard equipment on the NeoTherm Boiler includes a stainless steel pre-mix burner, a built in condensate trap, temperature & pressure gauge, drain valve, multiple pump control, and a burner sight glass.

The Laars NeoTherm NTH Residential Mod-Con Boilers are provided with a One-Year Parts Warranty on the entire unit, and a 12- Year Heat Exchanger Parts Warranty pro-rated in years 8 – 12.
