How Does A Toilet Tank Work?

The toilet bowl tank is a very important part of the toilet bowl. The toilet tank contains several important parts that are required to make the toilet flush. Inside of the toilet bowl tank you will find the toilet flush valve, toilet fill valve, the toilet flapper and the toilet chain. If one of these parts break or go bad your toilet possibly could not flush or work correctly. Before you work on the parts inside of the toilet bowl tank you will want to shut off the water supply.

When you need to use the toilet the first thing you will want to do is to make sure that the water supply is on. You then will want to push down on the toilet handle and flush the toilet, The toilet handle is connected to a chain that also connects to the toilet bowl flapper. When the toilet bowl chain lifts the flapper up, the water from the toilet bowl tank rushes into the toilet bowl. When all of the water is emptied from the toilet tank the toilet flapper then falls back into position so the toilet tank can fill back up.

The toilet tank is filled with something called the toilet bowl fill valve. The toilet fill valve is attached to the water supply line that is connected to the water supply valve. Depending on how high your toilet tank fill float is adjusted will depend on how much water is filled into the toilet tank. Most fill valves will have an adjustable float so you can set the toilet fill valve to add the correct amount of water into the toilet tank. If your toilet tank is filled with not enough water you could have problems with your toilet bowl flushing properly. If your toilet tank is being over filled by the toilet fill valve you could be wasting good clean water.

If your toilet bowl is filling slowly and you have no idea why you have a slow filling toilet chances are you will need to replace your toilet fill valve. The toilet fill valve can get gummed up with debris and then the water flow will start to get restricted from the toilet water supply and cause the toilet tank to fill slowly. You can replace the toilet fill valve with a new one usually for around $8 -$12 depending on the brand you buy.

Another common part that you will need to replace inside your toilet tank is the toilet flapper. Over the years the rubber that the toilet flapper is made from can break down from the chlorine and the hard minerals inside of the water. Sometimes you can also can build up of large iron deposits inside of your toilet tank if you have a lot of iron in your water supply.
