The GE Tall 6-Year water heaters make a lot of sense when you are looking for a GE Gas Water Heater to fit in a skinny place and not break the budget. When you buy a water heater in many cases there is little difference between the 6-Year Warranty models and the 9 to 12-Year Warranty models except the price. In many cases a water heater will last 12 years, why pay an extra $100 for an extra 3 years of warranty or $200 for and extra 6 years of warranty. The GE Tall FVIR Gas 6-YR 30-38,000 BTU Water Heaters have GE’s Smartshield FVIR System, which is a built in Flammable Vapor Ignition Resistance system now required by law. This provides protection when a flammable liquid is spilled near the water heater and the flammable vapors from the spill reach the pilot light of the water heater. The burner chamber is enclosed and the combustion air passes through a flame arrestor, which lets air in but keeps the flame from getting out. The Smartshield also detects an increase in flame size from the extra fuel present during an FVIR event and shuts the burner and pilot light off to further decrease the chances of a fire or explosion occurring. If shut down ever occurs from an FVIR event the combustion shut off device needs to be replaced before the water heater will operate again. The GE Smartshield FVIR System is in my opinion one of the better-designed systems and the air intake should be maintenance free vs. other brands that have filters and require frequent cleaning.
