Carrier Infinity Series Heat Pump Review

The Carrier Infinity 16 and Infinity 19 Heat Pumps offer efficiencies of up to 19.0 SEER and 9.0 HSPF for the Infinity 19, and 16.0 SEER and 9.0 HSPF for the Infinity 16. These high efficiencies allow the Carrier Infinity Series to carry the Energy Star Seal certifying their efficiency and making them eligible for Rebates, Grants, and Tax Credits. In addition to saving energy the Carrier Infinity Heat Pumps also use Puron refrigerant, which is an Ozone Layer Friendly blend of R-32 & R-125. The future availability of R-22 is something that should be considered when buying a heat pump system. Under the Montreal Protocol/U.S. Clean Air Act a 25% production reduction went into effect in 2004 with a 63% reduction coming in 2010 along with no new equipment using R-22 being allowed to be manufactured. In 2015 a 90% reduction goes into effect on R-22 production with a complete halt in 2020. At some point working on the refrigerant loop will become prohibitively expensive as we have already seen with automotive air conditioners and this should be considered when buying a new heat pump system.

The Carrier Infinity 16 and Infinity 19 Heat Pumps are eligible for Rebates of up to $200 under the Appliance Stimulus Package. In addition the Weatherization Assistance Program provides Grants of up to $6500 for households that qualify. The Infinity 16 and Infinity 19 are also eligible for an Income Tax Credit and may be eligible for other state and utility Rebate programs in effect in about ½ of the states.

In 1902 Willis Carrier fresh out of Cornell’s engineering school designed the 1st Mechanical Air Conditioning System while working for Buffalo Forge. In 1915 Willis Carrier and six other engineers founded Carrier Corporation in New York. Today Carrier is a wholly owned subsidiary of United Technologies Corp. and is based in Farmington, Connecticut with over 45,000 employees in 172 countries around the globe.

The Carrier Infinity 16 and Infinity 19 Heat Pumps feature the Infinity Control System that controls air quality, humidity, and air temperature while controlling the actual operation of the system for maximum comfort and economy of operation. The Infinity Control keeps tracks of past cycles and automatically selects the settings for maximum comfort and efficiency. The Infinity Control also monitors the maintenance needs of the system and will actually tell you when the filter needs to be changed. The 2-stage compressor will closely match to your needs and provide 24 – 60,000 Btuh of heating and 2 – 5 tons of cooling capacity. The cabinet is constructed of galvanized steel with a powder coat finish baked on for a virtually corrosion free cabinet offering protection from the elements. The coil is made of copper tube with aluminum fins to offer corrosion resistance with maximum heat transfer, and the unit features a Silencer System II which helps keep the Infinity 16 & 19 among the quietest heat pumps at 74 dbA for the Infinity 16 and 69 dbA for the Infinity 19. In addition Carrier offers a 10-Year Limited Parts Warranty to the original purchaser.
