Bradford White Residential Ultra High Efficiency Gas Water Heater Review

Bradford White’s Residential Ultra High Efficiency Gas Water Heater is a condensing gas water heater, which is capable of delivering a large volume of water while maintaining a thermal efficiency of 95% and having very low emissions. The model #’s EFR-1-60T1206EN for natural gas, and EFR-1-60T1206SX for propane are part of a radical new design where the burner is mounted on top of the unit and the heat is forced down through the unit before being exhausted. This type of design removes almost all the heat from combustion and draws it into the water before the flue gases are exhausted. In the case of the Bradford White Residential Ultra High Efficiency Gas Water Heaters the flue gases pass through 3 separate sections of tubes before being exhausted near the bottom of the unit on the side. So much of the heat is removed from the flue gases that moisture actually condenses releasing the latent heat of steam into the heating process, and the flue gases can be exhausted through PVC. The ultra high efficiency of 95% assures these water heaters an Energy Star Rating in the top class of most efficient gas water heaters and makes then eligible for a variety of “Free Money” programs that are offered as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The ARRA was designed to help stimulate our economy by boosting sales and installations of green or, greener products that offer a substantial energy consumption savings, while also providing lower emissions of pollutants. If you buy one of these water heaters you may be eligible for a Rebate of up to $200 under the Appliance Stimulus Package, Grants up to $6500 under the Weatherization Assistance Program if you qualify, and a Federal Income Tax Credit for 30% of the cost for purchase and installation up to $1500.

The Bradford White Residential Ultra High Efficiency Gas Water Heaters model #’s EFR-1-60T1206EN, and EFR-1-60T1206SX feature a 60-gallon (227-liter) tank and a built in heat exchanger, with a 120,000 Btu/hr burner. Both water heaters have a 1st hour delivery of 180 gallons with a 100-degree F rise. The burner is mounted on the top of the unit and the incoming fuel and air is mixed in the blower before going to the burner, where it is burned and the heat is pushed through 3 passes of the heat exchanger before being exhausted at the bottom of the unit. The entire combustion process is sealed with air drawn from outside and the exhaust going outside which results in no heat loss from air inside the building going out the flue. Both heaters can also be configured as a power vent system where the combustion air can be drawn from in the house. The gas valve operates at a negative pressure and senses the air flow to deliver the right amount of fuel with any changes of combustion air supply even high altitude operation.  The resulting flue gases have an extremely low NOx emission and even meet the requirements of SCAQMD in California where NOX emissions are regulated due to the fact they are a major component in smog and a greenhouse gas.

The Bradford White Residential Ultra High Efficiency Gas Water Heaters utilize a Honeywell Integrated Control where the temperature and differential can be adjusted and the temperature of the water can be displayed in ºC or, ºF. on a digital LCD display along with the operation mode and diagnostic and troubleshooting codes. The control can also record faults that have occurred for later recall during troubleshooting. The integrated control also controls the operation of the direct spark ignition so there is no pilot light wasting gas. Also included on the Bradford White EFR-1-60T1206EN, and EFR-1-60T1206SX water heaters is a thermostatic mixing valve which keeps the water going out for use at a safe temperature where scalding cannot occur and 1” NPT side connections to easily provide supplemental heat for space heating, geothermal and solar heating applications. Energy requirements for the EFR-1-60T1206EN, and EFR-1-60T1206SX water heaters are gas and a 120-volt AC, 15-ampere electrical connection.

Features on the Bradford White EFR-1-60T1206EN, and EFR-1-60T1206SX water heaters also found on all water heaters made by Bradford White include the Vitraglas lined tank for corrosion resistance, the Hydrojet sediment reducing dip tube, Non-CFC foam insulation, T&P valve installed, dielectric nipples, and a brass drain valve. Also installed on this unit are 4 magnesium anode rods to provide extra corrosion protection and the water heater comes with a 6-Year Warranty. Optional equipment includes 2 and 3” concentric venting kits for one hole venting of both the air inlet and flue through the wall or roof.

If you need a new gas water heater or, want to take advantage of the present “Free Money” programs a Bradford White Residential Ultra High Efficiency Gas Water Heater is an excellent choice.
