Beckett AF Oil Burner Review

The Beckett AF Oil Burner can supply an input of 56,000 to 420,000 BTU/hr to your heating equipment while firing at a rate of 0.40 to 3.00 gallons per hour. Reginald Beckett founded Beckett Corporation in Elyria, Ohio in 1937, and is now a third generation company still controlled by the Beckett family in Elyria. In the 72 years since its founding Beckett has become a recognized oil burner industry leader. Beckett oil burners are well made, highly reliable and very easy to service making them a favorite of oil burner service techs. In fact the Beckett burners were so well regarded they were selected to provide the heat at the National Science Foundation’s McMurdo Base in Antarctica where temperatures in the darkness of winter may reach well below –50-degrees F. If they can operate with high reliability in the harshest environment on earth heating your home in a temperate climate should be an easy task compared to Antarctica.

The Beckett AF Oil Burner and AFG burner appear to be identical in firing rate and output but there are differences between them that are significant. The primary difference is the blower design and capacity, which on the AF is a lower static pressure, The AFG also uses an air-guide on the inlet, and a low firing rate baffle where the AF does not. This makes the set up and operation capabilities quite different. The Beckett AF Oil Burner is designed to use #1 or, #2 heating oil and the burner operates on 120-Volts/60-Hz. using a maximum of 5.8 amperes to operate the burner and controls. The motor is a 3450-rpm motor with manual overload protection on a NEMA M flange mount. The ignition transformer is a continuous duty shielded transformer that supplies 10,000-volts/23 ma. to provide a strong spark for ignition. The oil pump can be either a single or 2 stage pump. The nozzle and electrode is self-centering and is one of the reasons why service techs love working on Beckett burners. Beckett burners feature a flame retention head that provides up to 35% higher efficiency. The Beckett AF uses a GeniSys Model 7505 Control that is compatible with thermostats and other operating and limit controls and even features a communications port where the service tech can place a model 52067 display module for programming and diagnostic functions in addition to providing intermittent or interrupted ignition. The 7505 control takes care of safety providing welded relay protection, and limiting recycle and resets with 15-second lockout time. Beckett Oil Burners come with a 60-Month Warranty.

The oil burner service techs tend to prefer working on Beckett oil burners over other brands. One of the reasons is Beckett has kept the design simplified and easy to work on, with excellent parts availability making their job easy. Beckett has kept the parts to a level where most parts could be stocked on a service techs truck or, at least at the shop making that midnight outage call a quick task to restore heat.
