The Little Torch That Can

411 plumb A few years back I bought a torch that taught me a lesson. For years I scoffed at the thought that a small MAPP Gas handheld torch was a plumber’s tool. After all real plumbers use Acetylene “B” & “MC” tanks with a regulator and hose. It’s what I learned to sweat pipe with. Those handheld rigs are just for homeowners and handyman types. The “B” and “MC” Acetylene tanks have a long history in plumbing. Just to give you and idea of how far back this tradition goes “B” stands for Bus and “MC” stands for Motor Car. The tanks were used to fuel Acetylene Headlights which were used from the 1880’s until electric headlamps were introduced in 1898. By the time 1910 rolled around, pretty much every car had electric headlamps. So as you can tell the affiliation of the “B” & “MC” tanks and plumbing, has been around for a few years.

Handheld Self Igniting MAPP Gas Torch

The day I bought a Handheld Self Igniting MAPP Gas Torch my life changed. I was doing plumbing service work and sweating pipe was a big production. Lugging the tank into the house, uncoiling the hose, turning on the tank, setting the regulator, selecting the right sized tip, sparking the igniter to light the torch, sweating a few joints, then shutting off the torch. Set up a few more joints then relight the torch….

When I bought the Handheld Self Igniting MAPP Gas Torch I didn’t expect that the change would be so drastic. I was changing out a water heater the first time I used it. Not a whole lot of sweating just 10 or, 12 joints. I set up for the first couple of joints squeezed the trigger to light the torch and sweated them up releasing the trigger when I was done. I then set up the next few and pulled the trigger on them too. After doing the job I marveled at how easy it was. Not having to carry in the bulky tank rig, fumble with valve knobs, and the flint igniter. I used it on the next job installing a tub/shower valve, again it was cake. No flare ups when turning the bottle, even upside down. My “B” and “MC” tanks saw less and less use getting buried further into the back corner of the van where things I didn’t often use land. Finally one day while I was cleaning my van, I pulled them out and parked them in the garage. The transition had been made.

No, you haven’t talked me into kicking yet. I still use my “B” tank a lot. I understand all the points you make and I realize they make it more convenient. I have a MAPP torch (mines a Turbotorch brand but nearly the same), I just am soooooo used to my “B” tank. I’ve been meaning to use my MAPP torch more often but I can’t see the “B” tank ever leaving the truck. Nice try! ;)

Once you try it you will like it!
I find it actually made me sweat joints quicker because I wasn’t worrying about putting the torch down.

  2. We have a bunch of them laying in the junk bins…
the solder, flux, water, mud and dirt will eventually clog them up and they
    will fail…

I LOVE my little MC tank, its never given me a days trouble
with a TURBO_TORCH on it …. As long as I have an extra tank
I can get anything accomplished with it…

they are good for the handy guy around the home but not
for the real combat situations I see and get into every day…

Funny you should mention that Mark…
      I had a similar experience with one…
I had an apprentice riding with me that was “Legend in His Own Mind”
I’m on a fast track to being a plumber types…

He was after me hard to let him sweat some joints…
I got tired of listening to him spout off about his greatness…
So Anyway… I let him have a go at it…
I ended up watching helplessly as he moved the torch directly under the joint…
Watching flux and solder drop right into the torch clogging it up…

Fortunately I was able to clean it out and continue using it…
The young “Know it All” was back to cutting, deburring, and cleaning tube where he belonged…
Sometimes problems like that can be a problem with improper use or, tool abuse.

Shortly after that the “Legend in His Own Mind” had to find another ride…
I also had a discussion with the boss where I told him I would “Interview” any apprentices before they get to ride with me…
